Tags

Labels that segment your database. The six built-in tags, creating your own, and using them to target email.

A tag is a label on a person. Tags are the fastest way to slice your database, and they are how most campaign audiences get built.

#Creating one

  1. 1

    Go to Contacts → Tags.

  2. 2

    Click + New Tag.

  3. 3

    Name it.

Letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and periods, up to 60 characters.

  4. 4

Save. New tags are pinned to the top of your list so you can start assigning immediately.

Duplicates are prevented, case included

"VIP Client" and "vip client" are treated as the same tag, so your list cannot quietly fill with near-identical labels.

#Renaming

Renaming a tag updates it on every contact that has it. You do not re-tag anyone.

#Assigning in bulk

  1. 1

Click a tag name, or its contact count, to open it.

  2. 2

Click Assign Tag and search by name or email.

  3. 3

    Select one or many.

Contacts who already have the tag are filtered out, so you cannot double-assign.

  4. 4

To remove, select contacts in the same view and remove the tag from them.

#Using tags to send

Tags are recipients in the composer and in campaign audiences, send to everyone tagged "First-Time Buyer" without building a list. See Choosing who gets it.

#Tagging well

  • Tag for things that stay true, "past client", "investor", "relocating". Not "emailed in March".
  • Tag at import. It is one click for the whole batch and tedious later.
  • Fewer, meaningful tags beat many overlapping ones.
  • Deleting a tag removes it from every contact, the contacts stay, the label goes.
