A contact list is a named collection of people you assemble for a purpose. Like tags, lists can be used as email recipients.
#Lists or tags?
| Tag | List | |
|---|---|---|
| Describes | What someone *is* | A group assembled *for something* |
| Stays current? | Yes, as you tag new people | Only if you maintain it |
| Good example | "First-time buyer" | "October open house attendees" |
| Poor example | "March newsletter", a moment, not an attribute | "Buyers", that is a tag |
When in doubt, use a tag
Tags stay meaningful over time and need no maintenance. Reach for a list when the group genuinely is a one-off assembly.
#Working with lists
Lists are managed from the Accounts area, where you can search them by name or description. Once built, a list is selectable as a recipient anywhere you choose an audience.
#Where lists win
- People who came to one specific event.
- A referral batch from one source.
- A hand-picked group for a single campaign.
- Anything where membership is the point and there is no shared attribute.
#Using both together
They combine. Send to a list and a tag in the same email, duplicates across the two are resolved automatically and each address receives one copy. See Choosing who gets it.
