The 8 Opportunity stages

The 8 stages every Opportunity moves through, what to do and what happens automatically at each one, and the Closed Won / Closed Lost trap.

Every Opportunity goes through the same 8 stages, in order. Move it with Next Stage or Previous Stage at the top of the page, the button reads "Changing Stage..." while it works.

Each stage email is sent once, ever

Moving an Opportunity back and forward again does not resend that stage’s email.

Closed Lost comes after Closed Won, not from anywhere

Closed Lost is not a branch you can reach from any stage, it is simply the last stage in the list. Clicking Next Stage on a Closed Won deal moves it to Closed Lost, do not do this. If it happens, click Previous Stage to put it back. And because Closed Lost can only be reached by stepping through every stage in between, a deal that actually failed at, say, Offer Submitted would receive the Under Contract, Due Diligence Ending and "We Did It!" emails on the way there if you moved it through by hand. Contact [email protected] to close a deal as lost instead of moving it through the stages.
